KAFA , the Leading
Film School in Korea
An educational institute that specializes in film education,
KAFA was founded by the Korean Film Council in 1984.

Korean Academy of Film Arts (KAFA) is a national film school established in 1984 by Korean Film Council (KOFIC) in South Korea. The main goal of KAFA is to focus on fostering professional filmmakers through highly selective and intensive education with field-centered training programs.

KAFA offers multiple ranges of education courses: Regular Program consisting of disciplines that include Directing, Cinematography, Producing, Animation, and Sound, as well as Feature Film Program for making feature-length films.

KAFA films are catching eyes every year when they step on the stages of both international film festivals and theaters all over the world.
So far, KAFA has produced over eight hundred outstanding filmmakers who are leading Korean film industry, including director Hur Jin-ho (9th graduate), Jang Joon-hwan (11th graduate), Choi Dong-hoon (15th graduate), Yoon Sung-hyun (25th graduate), and Cho Sung-Hee (25th graduate). In 2020, director Bong Joon-ho (11th graduate) won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, and also won the Academy Award for Best Director.

  • Focus on Production KAFA aims to train filmmakers in a real-life experience, and let them immersed in a challenging field-like production environment by making short films in Regular Program, and feature-length films in Feature Films Program.

At the end of KAFA’s training programs, students will be able to acquire practical, cutting-edge filming knowledge that can be used in the field.
  • Selective and Intensive Education KAFA sticks to a selective and intensive teaching method; only a few selective filmmakers who pass a highly competitive entrance examination can be students of KAFA, and as students of KAFA, they must go through intensive challenging education programs.
  • Respecting Individuality KAFA’s philosophy of education is based on respect for individuality. Weekly critiques and mentoring sessions will help nourish students’ individuality and flourish their creativity.
